Dominic Toretto

The Echo Park garage owner who lives his life a quarter mile at a time

Dominic Toretto runs a garage and a street racing crew in Echo Park, Los Angeles. He looks after his sister Mia, treats his friends like family and is the man to beat on the street. When a newcomer named Brian shows up wanting to race him, Dom has no idea the kid is an undercover cop.

The Fast and the Furious (2001)

A quarter mile at a time

Dom grew up around engines. In 1989 he watched his father, Jack, die in a crash caused by another driver, Kenny Linder. Days later Dom found Linder and beat him with a wrench. He did two years in prison and was banned from racing for life.

Now he runs the garage and the Echo Park crew: Mia, Letty, Vince, Leon and Jesse. He beats rookie Brian O'Conner in a race, leaving Brian owing him a ten-second car, and lets him into the shop. What the crew hides is that they have been hijacking trucks. The last job goes wrong: Vince is shot, Brian reveals he is a cop and Johnny Tran kills Jesse. Dom pulls his father's Dodge Charger out of the garage, races Brian across the railroad tracks and flips. Instead of arresting him, Brian hands over the keys to the Supra. Dom drives away.

Coming home

Five years later, Dom was hijacking fuel tankers in the Dominican Republic with Letty, Han, Leo and Santos. Sensing the police closing in, he left alone to protect Letty. Months later, Mia calls: Letty has been murdered.

Dom returns to Los Angeles and follows a nitromethane trail to Fenix, enforcer for the drug lord Braga. To get close, he enters a race that recruits drivers and runs into Brian, now with the FBI. He learns Letty had been working undercover to clear his name. With Brian, he captures Braga in Mexico and kills Fenix at the mouth of the tunnel. The judge ignores Brian's plea for leniency and gives Dom 25 years. On the way to Lompoc, the bus is surrounded by Brian, Mia, Leo and Santos.

The Rio vault

On the run, Dom, Brian and Mia head to Rio de Janeiro. A car heist on a train leaves DEA agents dead, and the blame lands on them. Agent Luke Hobbs arrives to hunt them down, with local cop Elena Neves at his side.

When Mia says she is pregnant, Dom decides on one last score: Hernan Reyes's 100 million dollars. He calls in Han, Gisele, Roman, Tej, Leo and Santos. After Reyes's men ambush his convoy, Hobbs switches sides. The crew rips the vault out of the police station and drags it through the city, but the real cash had already been swapped. Everyone scatters, rich. Dom stays with Elena.

London

Hobbs shows up with a photo: Letty is alive and working for the mercenary Owen Shaw. In exchange for full pardons, Dom brings the crew to Europe. In London, Letty shoots at him without recognizing him. She has lost her memory, and Shaw took her in. Dom races her and gives back her cross necklace.

In Spain, when Letty is thrown from Shaw's tank, Dom leaps and catches her in midair. She chooses him. On the runway, the crew tethers Shaw's cargo plane with cables and Dom drives the Charger out through its nose. Pardoned, everyone returns to the house in Los Angeles. Elena understands and leaves. In the credits scene, a stranger calls Dom: "You don't know me, but you're about to."

Shaw and Cipher

The man on the phone is Deckard Shaw, Owen's brother. He puts Hobbs in the hospital and blows up Dom's house. Dom travels to Tokyo to bring Han's body home, and at the funeral in Los Angeles he spots Deckard from a distance.

Agent Mr. Nobody offers help: the God's Eye, a program that can find anyone, in exchange for rescuing the hacker Ramsey from the terrorist Mose Jakande. The crew skydives with their cars over the Caucasus and hits Abu Dhabi. Back in Los Angeles, Dom fights Deckard in a parking garage and drives his car into Jakande's helicopter. Unconscious, he hears Letty say she remembers everything, including their wedding. Brian decides to stay home with Mia and the kids. On an open road, the two friends say goodbye.

On his honeymoon in Havana, Dom wins a race to save his cousin Fernando. The next day, the cyberterrorist Cipher shows him something on her phone, and he starts taking her orders. In Berlin he steals an EMP device from his own crew.

The secret: Cipher is holding Elena and a son Dom never knew he had. When he pushes back, her enforcer Rhodes kills Elena in front of him. Deckard Shaw boards Cipher's plane and saves the baby. Free of the blackmail, Dom turns on Cipher on the Russian ice, kills Rhodes and goes home to his family. He names his son Brian.

A brother and Reyes's son

Dom is living off the grid with Letty and little Brian until a distress call from Mr. Nobody pulls them back in. The enemy now is Jakob, the younger brother Dom drove out of the family years ago, convinced he had tampered with their father's engine. Jakob tells a different story: Jack, deep in debt, asked him to rig the engine so he would lose the race. In the end the brothers fight Otto and Cipher together, and Dom lets Jakob go. At the family table, even Han is back.

In Fast X, the bill for Rio comes due: Dante, Hernan Reyes's son, wants revenge. Dom pushes a bomb into the Tiber in Rome, loses a race to Dante in Rio and ends up hunted by the Agency. Jakob saves little Brian in Portugal and sacrifices himself. Dom and his son drive off a dam, Dante blows it up, and the movie ends without saying whether they survived.
