In episode 4, Viserys shows Rhaenyra a Valyrian steel dagger that belonged to Aegon the Conqueror. Heated in the fire, it reveals an inscription about the prince that was promised and the song of ice and fire. That dagger comes back later.
source ↗Ramin Djawadi, the composer of Game of Thrones, came back for the score and kept the original show's main title theme.
source ↗Because of the ten-year time jump midway through the season, Milly Alcock and Emily Carey play young Rhaenyra and Alicent. Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke take over afterward.
source ↗The season swaps the opening titles for an embroidered tapestry, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, that tells Targaryen history thread by thread.
source ↗Milly Alcock, young Rhaenyra from season one, comes back in a guest role.
source ↗Filming kept going through the 2023 Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes. The mostly British cast was covered by the UK union Equity's rules.
source ↗The antlered figure at the end of episode 1 is likely one of the Green Men, guardians of the Isle of Faces. In one version told in Fire & Blood, Addam of Hull lands alone on the isle and speaks with one of them.
source ↗Dan Fogler, Jacob Kowalski in Fantastic Beasts, joins the cast as Torrhen Manderly, whom Rhaenyra makes Master of Coin.
source ↗HBO ordered this season in June 2024, three days before season two premiered. HBO later confirmed that season four will be the last.
source ↗The season adapts The Hedge Knight, the 1998 novella that kicked off George R. R. Martin's Dunk and Egg stories. The first episode shares its name.
source ↗Martin pitched a Dunk and Egg series to HBO in 2016, and the network chose House of the Dragon instead. That same year, Ryan Condal suggested the idea to Martin, who turned it down because he wanted to finish the story first.
source ↗The six episodes run 30 to 42 minutes, much shorter than the other Westeros shows. Critics singled out its buddy-comedy tone.
source ↗George R. R. Martin filmed a cameo as a Pentoshi nobleman at Daenerys and Drogo's wedding in the original pilot. Daenerys was recast, the scene was reshot, and he was cut.
source ↗HBO wasn't happy with the first pilot, and much of it was reshot. In it, Tamzin Merchant played Daenerys and Jennifer Ehle played Catelyn; the roles went to Emilia Clarke and Michelle Fairley.
source ↗Martin praises the show's throne but says the one in the books is far bigger: a hunched, lopsided beast of thousands of swords, too big to even fit on the set.
source ↗"The Rains of Castamere" keeps turning up: Tyrion whistles it in the first episode, the soldiers sing it before the battle in "Blackwater", and The National plays it over the credits. Remember that song.
source ↗George R. R. Martin wrote "Blackwater". The season got a 15% bigger budget to stage that battle.
source ↗In the books, Theon's sister is called Asha. The show renamed her Yara to avoid confusion with Osha, the wildling at Winterfell.
source ↗Martin drew on two events from Scottish history: the Black Dinner of 1440, where two young Douglases were killed after a feast, and the 1692 Glencoe massacre, where guests murdered their hosts.
source ↗Will Champion, Coldplay's drummer, cameos as one of the musicians playing at the wedding at the Twins.
source ↗George R. R. Martin wrote episode 7, "The Bear and the Maiden Fair", named after the song the Bolton men sing.
source ↗Icelandic band Sigur Rós plays "The Rains of Castamere" at Joffrey's wedding feast.
source ↗The season opens with Tywin having Ice, Ned Stark's Valyrian steel greatsword, melted down. It becomes two blades: one for Jaime, and Widow's Wail for Joffrey.
source ↗Pedro Pascal joins as Oberyn Martell. The producers said he made the part look effortless.
source ↗This is where the show starts pulling away from the published books. Tyrion, for one, meets Daenerys, which hasn't happened in the books yet.
source ↗Screeners of the first four episodes leaked right before the premiere. They racked up 32 million downloads in the first week.
source ↗Cersei's walk of atonement was shot on the Stradun, Dubrovnik's main street in Croatia, between the cathedral and the Sponza Palace.
source ↗In "The Door", the show reveals where the name Hodor came from: the cry of "hold the door" he heard as a young man shrinks into a single word.
source ↗Ramin Djawadi's "Light of the Seven", which opens the season finale, hit No. 1 on Billboard's Spotify Viral 50 chart.
source ↗Max von Sydow takes over as the Three-Eyed Raven, and Ian McShane shows up as a septon.
source ↗Ed Sheeran cameos as a Lannister soldier singing by a campfire when Arya passes. Members of the band Bastille also filmed cameos.
source ↗The season opens with Arya disguised as Walder Frey, serving poisoned wine to the men of House Frey at a feast.
source ↗For the first time a season has seven episodes instead of ten. The stone stairway of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spain became the approach to Dragonstone.
source ↗In episode 4, a takeaway coffee cup sits on the feast table at Winterfell in front of Daenerys. It wasn't from Starbucks, and HBO digitally erased it afterward.
source ↗With only six episodes, the season has the longest ones in the show. "The Long Night" runs 82 minutes and the finale 80.
source ↗In 2019, a Change.org petition asking HBO to remake the season with different writers topped 1.7 million signatures.
