Sixty years later, Thomas Anderson is a famous game designer in San Francisco: he made The Matrix game trilogy, based on memories he thinks are delusions. He takes blue pills prescribed by his analyst and meets Tiffany, who looks a lot like Trinity, at a coffee shop. Captain Bugs and a new Morpheus, born from a program, pull him out of the Matrix. Neo learns the machines rebuilt his body and Trinity's, and that the Analyst uses their bond to generate power. In Io, the city that followed Zion, he reunites with an elderly Niobe. Neo makes a deal: if Trinity won't leave, he'll go back to his pod. She chooses to leave and finds out she can fly too. The two set off planning to remake the Matrix.

Lana Wachowski lost her father, her mother and a close friend in 2019. Unable to bring them back, one sleepless night she imagined bringing back Neo and Trinity.
Laurence Fishburne said he wasn't asked back, and Hugo Weaving had a scheduling conflict with a stage play. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Groff stepped in, and the old footage shows up in flashbacks.
