Morpheus

The Nebuchadnezzar's captain, searching for the One

Morpheus is captain of the Nebuchadnezzar, one of the human resistance's ships. To the Agents, he's the most dangerous man alive. He has spent his life looking for the One, a human who, according to the Oracle, will end the war with the machines, and he believes he's found him in Neo.

The Matrix

The choice

Morpheus guides Neo over the phone to escape the Agents, then meets him in a room on a rainy night. He explains that the Matrix is a world built to hide the truth and offers the two pills. When Neo takes the red one, it's Morpheus's ship that picks him up. He tells Neo about the war lost to the machines, about Zion, the last human city, and about the prophecy of the One.

In training, Morpheus spars with Neo in a virtual dojo and takes him to a jump program between buildings. He explains that inside the Matrix the rules can bend, but if you die in there, you die for real.

Agent Smith's prisoner

After the visit to the Oracle, Cypher sells the group out to the Agents. Morpheus takes on Smith to buy the others time and is captured. Smith interrogates him in a government building to get the access codes to Zion's mainframe and, in the middle of the torture, tells him humans are a disease.

Neo and Trinity storm the building and rescue him by helicopter. Morpheus is the first out through the phone line and, back on the ship, watches Neo die and come back with powers. For him, the prophecy has come true.

A lost dream

Six months later, the Sentinels are digging toward Zion. Commander Lock orders every ship home, but Morpheus wants to wait for word from the Oracle and clashes with him. Niobe, captain of the Logos, used to be with Morpheus and is now with Lock. In Zion, Morpheus gives a speech to the people before the big celebration.

Inside the Matrix, he helps get the Keymaker away from the Merovingian, fights on top of a truck on the freeway and beats the Twins. At the end, a Sentinel destroys the Nebuchadnezzar. Morpheus watches his ship burn and says he had a dream, and that dream is gone.

The run to Zion

With no ship and his faith shaken, Morpheus goes with Trinity and Seraph to Club Hel to free Neo's mind from the Merovingian. Then he boards the Hammer, flown by Niobe, who takes a route no one else would try: the service tunnels to Zion's docks.

They arrive in the middle of the Sentinel invasion and fire the EMP that takes the machines down, but also knocks out the city's defenses. Soon after, when all seems lost, the Sentinels stop and pull back: Neo's deal with the machines worked.

The Matrix Resurrections

A new Morpheus

In Resurrections, the Morpheus who shows up is someone else. Thomas Anderson, now a game designer, built a program inside a modal, a simulation used to develop characters, that mixes memories of the original Morpheus with traits of Agent Smith. That program lived as an Agent until Captain Bugs offered him the red pill.

Once free, he helps Bugs find Anderson and, to jog his memory, shows him footage of his first meeting with the real Morpheus. Then he offers the red pill again. Neo takes it and wakes up in the real world.

Off screen

In comics and books

The Wachowskis told Laurence Fishburne to base his performance on Morpheus from Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics, the lord of dreams. In Resurrections, the role goes to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Fishburne said in 2025 that he offered to come back, but the filmmakers didn't respond well.
