Trinity

The hacker who brings Neo to Morpheus

Trinity is a hacker famous for cracking a database nobody could break. Morpheus freed her from the Matrix, and now she's first mate on the Nebuchadnezzar. She's the one who finds Neo and puts him face to face with Morpheus.

The Matrix

The woman in black

The first film opens with Trinity in a run-down hotel room, surrounded by cops. She takes them all down and runs across the rooftops with Agents on her tail, until she escapes through a pay phone. Later she finds Neo, tells him Morpheus has the answers and, after that, pulls out the bug the Agents planted in him.

When Morpheus is captured, Trinity refuses to let Neo go rescue him alone. She flies the helicopter in the attack on the building. In the final scenes, with Sentinels tearing into the ship, she stays by Neo's body and tells him what the Oracle predicted: that she would fall in love with the One. She kisses him, and Neo comes back.

Free fall

Six months later, Trinity and Neo are together. She helps rescue the Keymaker from the Merovingian and takes on Agents and the Twins in the freeway chase. Neo keeps dreaming that she dies, and asks her to stay on the ship during the mission to open the door to the Source.

When the Vigilant is destroyed, Trinity takes its crew's place and gets the job done: she hacks the power plant's grid to cut the power. Agent Thompson corners her, and she falls off a building with a bullet in her chest. Neo flies in, catches her in midair, pulls out the bullet and gets her heart beating again.

Sunlight

With Neo's mind trapped at Mobil Ave, Trinity, Morpheus and Seraph go to Club Hel to confront the Merovingian. Trinity puts a gun to his head and demands Neo's release, and gets it. Then she insists on going with Neo to the Machine City and flies the Logos.

Bane, possessed by Smith, stows away and takes her hostage. As they arrive, the ship comes under attack. Trinity climbs above the clouds and, for a moment, sees blue sky and the sun. The ship crashes, she's impaled by steel bars and dies in Neo's arms after saying goodbye.

Tiffany

Sixty years later, Trinity lives in the Matrix as Tiffany, a mother of three married to a guy named Chad, with a love for motorcycles. She remembers nothing, but keeps running into Thomas Anderson at a coffee shop, the creator of a game where a character named Trinity looks like her.

Neo learns she was brought back too and that the Analyst keeps them apart to generate energy. He bets everything on her choice. In front of the Analyst, Tiffany says her name is Trinity. With enemies closing in, she jumps off a rooftop and discovers she can fly. At the end, she and Neo set out to remake the Matrix.

In comics and books

Reading the script, Carrie-Anne Moss doubted she could handle the stunts. She passed a three-hour physical test, and the role launched her career. Janet Jackson was approached first, and Sandra Bullock turned the part down. After the film, Trinity caught on as a baby name in the US, reaching No. 48 for girls. She also appears in the Kid's Story short from The Animatrix and in the game Enter the Matrix.
