Hermione Granger

Hermione shows up on the Hogwarts Express looking for Neville's toad, fixes Harry's glasses with a spell and tells Ron he has dirt on his nose. In Charms class she teaches Ron how to pronounce "Wingardium Leviosa" and floats her feather before anyone else. Ron remarks that she has no friends; she overhears and goes off to cry in the girls' bathroom.

On Halloween, a troll gets into the castle and corners Hermione in that bathroom. Harry and Ron save her, and when Professor McGonagall arrives, Hermione lies to protect them and takes the blame. From then on, the three are friends.

She's the one who figures out who Nicolas Flamel is and who remembers that Devil's Snare hates light, saving the boys on the way to the Sorcerer's Stone. After the chess match, she takes the injured Ron back and lets Harry go on. Dumbledore gives Gryffindor 50 points for her "use of cool intellect."

Draco Malfoy calls Hermione a Mudblood, the slur for wizards born to Muggle parents. Ron tries to curse Draco with his broken wand and spends the afternoon throwing up slugs. When the Chamber of Secrets attacks begin, Hermione brews Polyjuice Potion in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom so the three can spy on Draco in Slytherin. Harry and Ron turn into Crabbe and Goyle, but the hair she used was cat hair, and Hermione ends up with a cat's face and ears.

Later she turns up petrified. Harry finds a page about the basilisk in her hand, with the word "pipes" scribbled on it: the missing clue. She's restored at the end of the year with the Mandrake draught and runs to hug Harry in the Great Hall.

In third year, Hermione turns up in classes that happen at the same time, and nobody understands how. Her cat, Crookshanks, keeps going after Scabbers, Ron's rat, and the two of them fight about it. She loses her patience in a Divination class with Professor Trelawney and walks out. She also punches Draco Malfoy in the face.

In the Shrieking Shack, she's the first to figure out Lupin's secret. At the end she reveals the Time-Turner McGonagall gave her so she could take extra classes. On Dumbledore's advice, she and Harry go back three hours, save Buckbeak the hippogriff from execution and help Sirius Black escape from the tower where he's locked up.

During the Triwizard Tournament, Hermione is the only one who stays on Harry's side when Ron pulls away, convinced his friend cheated. Ron takes too long to ask her to the Yule Ball, and she already has a date: Viktor Krum, the Durmstrang champion. She walks down the staircase all dressed up and leaves the room speechless. At the end of the night she fights with Ron and tells him that next time he should ask her first, not as a last resort.

In the second task, Hermione is the person Krum has to rescue from the bottom of the lake.

With Dolores Umbridge banning spell practice in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Hermione suggests that Harry teach their classmates in secret. She sets up the meeting at the Hog's Head, where the group's sign-up sheet is born. Dumbledore's Army starts training in the Room of Requirement.

When Umbridge catches Harry trying to talk to Sirius through the fireplace, Hermione invents a secret weapon of Dumbledore's hidden in the forest and leads the professor to the centaurs, who carry her off. Then she goes with Harry to the Department of Mysteries and fights the Death Eaters.

Hermione distrusts the Half-Blood Prince's Potions book from the start and thinks Harry is cheating. Ron starts dating Lavender Brown, and a hurt Hermione sets a flock of little birds on him. To get back at him, she goes to Slughorn's Christmas party with Cormac McLaggen. Harry finds her crying on a staircase and tells her he knows how it feels, thinking of Ginny.

When Ron is poisoned with mead on his birthday, Hermione stays by his bed in the hospital wing, and he mumbles her name in his sleep.

Before leaving, Hermione wipes her parents' memories and erases herself from the family photos to protect them. She packs everything into a small beaded bag with an Undetectable Extension Charm: clothes, books, potions and an entire tent. She's the one who Apparates the trio away from Bill and Fleur's wedding, who disguises herself as a Ministry employee to steal the locket, and who keeps them hidden for months. When Ron leaves, she's crushed. In Godric's Hollow, one of her spells saves Harry from Nagini but ends up breaking his wand. At Malfoy Manor, Bellatrix Lestrange tortures her to find out where the sword of Gryffindor came from.

In the final film she takes Polyjuice Potion to become Bellatrix and get into the Lestrange vault at Gringotts. In the Chamber of Secrets she destroys Hufflepuff's cup with a basilisk fang and, right after, kisses Ron. She fights in the Battle of Hogwarts to the very end. Nineteen years later she's married to Ron and takes their kids to Platform 9¾.

In the books, Hermione has bushy hair and large front teeth, which she has shrunk in the fourth book with help from the hospital wing. She also starts a campaign for house-elf rights that almost nobody takes seriously, and it was left out of the movies. In the first book she solves a logic puzzle with seven potion bottles on the way to the Stone; that challenge was cut from the movie. Her middle name is Jean.
