Quick recap

Three years later, the Empire finds the rebel base on Hoth and crushes it. Guided by Obi-Wan's spirit, Luke goes to Dagobah to train with Jedi Master Yoda. Han, Leia, Chewbacca and C-3PO flee in the Falcon, hide, and reach Bespin's Cloud City, run by Han's old friend Lando Calrissian. Leia and Han admit their feelings. Lando hands them over to Vader, and Han is frozen in carbonite and taken by bounty hunter Boba Fett to Jabba the Hutt. Luke cuts his training short to save his friends and duels Vader, who severs his hand and reveals, "I am your father." Luke refuses to join him and is rescued. Lando switches sides, and he and Chewie set off after Han.

Hidden details

  1. Behind the scenes"I know" was Harrison Ford's idea

Before the carbonite freezing, Leia tells Han she loves him. The script had a different reply; Ford suggested the curt 'I know' and the line stayed.

  2. Behind the scenesThe fake reveal on set

David Prowse, Vader's body, shot the duel with a different line: 'Obi-Wan killed your father.' The real line was dubbed in later, and on set almost nobody besides the director, the producers and Mark Hamill knew.

  3. Behind the scenesThe Emperor's first face

In the hologram where Vader talks with the Emperor, the 1980 version used a Rick Baker mask worn by his wife, with chimpanzee eyes superimposed, and Clive Revill's voice.

  4. Behind the scenesThe Imperial March debuts here

Vader's theme didn't exist in the 1977 film. John Williams wrote the Imperial March for this episode, and it was first played in public three weeks before the premiere.
