Episode IV – A New Hope

A new hope

As a young man, Luke buys two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, and finds a hologram of a princess begging Obi-Wan for help. The search leads him to 'Ben' Kenobi, who tells him his father was a Jedi and gives him Anakin's lightsaber. Soon after, Imperial troops kill Owen and Beru, and Luke has nothing left tying him to the planet.

In Mos Eisley he hires Han Solo and Chewbacca, helps rescue Princess Leia from the Death Star and watches Obi-Wan fall to Vader. At the Battle of Yavin, guided by his mentor's voice, he switches off his targeting computer and makes the shot that destroys the station.

When Palpatine tortures him with lightning, Anakin comes back: he throws his master down the reactor shaft and dies in his son's arms. Luke burns his father's armor on a pyre and sees the spirits of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda at the victory celebration.

The first student

On a forest planet, Luke builds a temple and trains Grogu, who slowly remembers old lessons and the day he escaped the Jedi Temple during Order 66. Ahsoka Tano visits and notices the little one misses the Mandalorian.

Luke then offers a choice: the beskar chainmail sent by Din or Yoda's lightsaber. Choosing the saber means going on as a Jedi; choosing the armor means going back to his adoptive father and leaving the training. Grogu picks the armor and returns to Din.

Crait

Luke tosses the saber over his shoulder and says he came to the island to die. Cut off from the Force, he lives in isolation, but agrees to give Rey three lessons. She ends up uncovering what he hid: one night, sensing the darkness in Ben, Luke actually ignited his saber for an instant. His nephew woke up, saw the blade and brought down the temple.

Yoda's spirit appears, burns the tree holding the Jedi texts and reminds him that failure teaches too. At the Battle of Crait, Luke projects his own image across the galaxy, says goodbye to Leia and faces Kylo Ren alone. The time he buys is enough for the Resistance to escape. Spent, he looks at Ahch-To's two suns and becomes one with the Force.
