Dobby the house-elf tries to keep Harry from going back to Hogwarts, but he arrives anyway, in a flying car with Ron. At school, students start turning up petrified, and a message on the wall says the Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Harry learns he can speak to snakes and becomes a suspect. An old diary of Tom Riddle's blames Hagrid, who is taken to Azkaban. Hermione is petrified but leaves a clue: the monster is a basilisk. When Ginny vanishes, Harry enters the Chamber and finds Riddle is a young Voldemort preserved in the diary. With Fawkes and the sword of Gryffindor, Harry kills the basilisk and stabs the diary with a fang. He frees Dobby with a sock and Hagrid returns. In the book, Harry stuffs the diary into his sock before handing it to Lucius Malfoy. In the film it's the other way around: the sock goes inside the diary.
At the end of the film, Lucius Malfoy starts casting the Killing Curse at Harry before Dobby stops him. In the book, he only lunges at Harry, no wand involved.
