Eighteen months after the battle of Metropolis, Bruce Wayne, Batman in Gotham for twenty years, sees Superman as a threat. Lex Luthor gets hold of kryptonite and Zod's body and plays them against each other. Batman steals the kryptonite, and Lex kidnaps Martha Kent to force Superman to fight. Batman is about to kill him when he hears the name Martha, his own mother's name, and stops. They team up, Bruce saves Martha, and Lex unleashes Doomsday, made from Zod's DNA. The mysterious Diana Prince joins the fight as Wonder Woman. Superman kills the creature with the kryptonite spear and dies too. Bruce decides to gather other metahumans. On Clark's coffin, the dirt starts to rise.

ReferenceRobin's suit in the Batcave
The Batcave holds a Robin suit spray-painted with a Joker taunt: "HA HA HA, joke's on you Batman." The film never explains it, but it hints that Batman has already lost a partner.
The files Diana opens show footage of three metahumans: a speedster, a man at the bottom of the sea and a young man tied to strange technology. All three come back later.
