Hulk

Bruce Banner, the scientist who shares his body with a monster

Bruce Banner is a scientist who, after an experiment with gamma radiation, started turning into a giant green creature whenever he loses control. In The Incredible Hulk, he's hiding out in Brazil, on the run from the U.S. military.

The Incredible Hulk

Hiding in Rio

The Incredible Hulk, from 2008, stars Edward Norton. The origin flies by in the opening credits: a gamma radiation experiment, tied to a military super-soldier program, goes wrong, and Banner destroys the lab and injures his girlfriend, Betty Ross. Her father, General Thaddeus Ross, starts hunting him.

When the film begins, Banner lives in Rocinha, in Rio de Janeiro, works at a soda bottling plant, and practices breathing to control his heart rate. A drop of his blood falls into a bottle, and the trail leads Ross to him. On the run, Banner returns to the United States, reunites with Betty, and seeks out a scientist he's been messaging, Samuel Sterns.

Ross turns soldier Emil Blonsky into the Abomination, who tears up Harlem. Banner jumps out of a helicopter to turn into the Hulk on purpose and defeats the creature. At the end, he's isolated in Canada, trying to control the transformation. Starting with The Avengers, the role goes to Mark Ruffalo.

Professor Hulk

In Avengers: Endgame, five years later, Banner shows up with the Hulk's body and his own mind. He explains he spent 18 months in a gamma lab until he merged the two halves. In the time heist, he goes to New York in 2012 and convinces the Ancient One to hand over the Time Stone.
