Darth Maul

Sidious sends Maul after Queen Amidala, who escaped the blockade of Naboo. On Tatooine, he ambushes Qui-Gon Jinn, but the Jedi gets away with the queen and the boy Anakin.

They meet again on Naboo. Maul takes on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Kenobi at the same time and kills Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan, still a Padawan, cuts Maul in half and watches him fall down the generator shaft. For audiences in 1999, that was the end.

Maul survived, driven by hatred. Years later, Mother Talzin of the Nightsisters tells Savage Opress he has a living brother. Savage finds him on the junk planet Lotho Minor: insane, legless, propped up on a mechanical spider body.

Back on Dathomir, Talzin restores his mind and Maul gets new legs. The first thing he does is lure Obi-Wan into an ambush. He wants revenge for what he lost on Naboo.

Without Sidious, Maul decides to build his own power. He brings the Mandalorian group Death Watch, Black Sun, and the Pyke Syndicate together into a single cartel, the Shadow Collective. Together, they topple Mandalore's pacifist government. When Pre Vizsla tries to take command for himself, Maul challenges him to a duel, kills his rival, and takes the Darksaber.

To hurt Obi-Wan, Maul kills Duchess Satine Kryze in front of him. Soon after, Sidious shows up on Mandalore, kills Savage, and overpowers Maul. The master doesn't forgive an apprentice who tried to become a rival.

Near the end of the war, Maul is back in control of Mandalore. He knows Sidious is about to make his final move and that the target is Anakin Skywalker. Ahsoka Tano arrives with Bo-Katan and clone troops, fights Maul, and captures him, even after he tries to convince her to team up against Sidious.

Aboard the cruiser carrying the prisoner, Order 66 begins. Ahsoka frees Maul to create chaos. He sabotages the ship and escapes on a shuttle before the crash.

About a year later, with the Empire already in power, Maul turns up on Janix, a planet whose main city sits inside a crater and has its own police force, to get revenge on the criminals who betrayed him. His followers rob a bank, he takes out Pyke leader Marg Krim, and he installs someone loyal to him. Captain Brander Lawson of the Janix police investigates the case without handing everything over to the Empire.

Along the way, Maul crosses paths with Devon Izara, a young Jedi on the run, and decides to make her his apprentice. The Empire occupies the city with Inquisitors. Darth Vader arrives on Janix and kills Devon's master, Daki. Consumed by rage, Devon agrees to train under Maul, and the two leave the planet on Dryden Vos's ship, from Crimson Dawn.

Maul is the one behind Crimson Dawn. After Dryden Vos dies, Qi'ra contacts the leader by hologram. It's Maul, who orders her to come meet him on Dathomir.

Years later, Maul is stranded on Malachor, a planet with an ancient Sith temple. There he meets Ezra Bridger, pretends to be an ally, and draws him closer to the dark side. In the final showdown, he attacks Kanan Jarrus and blinds him. He escapes in the Inquisitors' ship.

Maul kidnaps the Ghost crew to force Ezra to merge two holocrons, one Jedi and one Sith. Through that, he learns Obi-Wan is alive. From then on, the only thing that matters is finding him, and the clue he has is an image of twin suns.

Maul follows Ezra to Tatooine and finally finds Obi-Wan, now old, watching over young Luke from a distance. The duel lasts seconds. Obi-Wan strikes him down, and Maul dies in his old enemy's arms. Before that, he asks if the boy he protects is the Chosen One. Obi-Wan says yes, and Maul dies saying he will avenge them both.

The miniseries Son of Dathomir (2014) adapts unproduced scripts from The Clone Wars: it shows Maul escaping Sidious and waging war on his old master and Count Dooku, with Mother Talzin caught in the middle.
