Quick recap

Katniss is in District 13, run by President Coin. Plutarch wants to make her the Mockingjay, the face of the rebellion in propaganda videos. She agrees if the captured victors are pardoned. On a visit to a District 8 hospital, the Capitol bombs it, and Katniss records her message: "If we burn, you burn with us." Meanwhile, Peeta appears on Capitol TV calling for a ceasefire. Katniss sings "The Hanging Tree," which becomes an anthem, and rebels blow up a dam that powers the Capitol. Peeta warns on live TV that 13 will be attacked. A rescue brings back Peeta, Johanna, Annie and Enobaria. At their reunion, Peeta tries to strangle Katniss: the Capitol conditioned him to hate her. He's put in isolation, and the war goes on.

Hidden details

  1. Behind the scenesThe melody is by the Lumineers

The lyrics of "The Hanging Tree" are Suzanne Collins's, straight from the book. The tune Katniss sings by the lake was written by Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites of the Lumineers. Sung by Jennifer Lawrence, it hit No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

  2. SetupThe untouched white rose

In the ruins of District 12, Katniss finds a perfect white rose inside her house. The film doesn't explain it right away. Later the white roses come back, and it becomes clear it's a message from Snow.

  3. Behind the scenesEffie instead of Fulvia

In the book, Katniss's image in District 13 is handled by Fulvia, Plutarch's assistant. In the films Effie takes that role, at Suzanne Collins's own request.

  4. Behind the scenesA real shaved head

Natalie Dormer really shaved the left side of her head to play Cressida, and it was re-shaved every day. The tattoo was applied by makeup each morning.

  5. Behind the scenesA dedication to Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played Plutarch, died in February 2014 after shooting most of his scenes. The film is dedicated to him before the end credits.
