In Zack Snyder's version Superman's death awakens the Mother Boxes, and Steppenwolf returns to Earth to win back Darkseid's favor as Darkseid hunts the Anti-Life Equation. Bruce and Diana gather Barry, Arthur and Victor, who gets a central role. With the last box they resurrect Superman, who returns in a black suit after reuniting with Lois and Martha. In the battle in Russia the Unity happens and the world ends, but the Flash enters the Speed Force, turns back time and lets Victor separate the boxes. Diana beheads Steppenwolf, and Darkseid vows to return. In the epilogue, Bruce has a vision of a dark future, Lex tells Deathstroke who Batman is, and the Martian Manhunter introduces himself to Bruce.

The cut is presented in 4:3 because Snyder framed everything for IMAX. To him, superheroes are vertical figures and fit better on a taller screen.
In the history lesson about Darkseid's first invasion, a Green Lantern fights alongside gods, Amazons and Atlanteans. It's Yalan Gur, who wore the ring centuries ago in the comics.
