Owen Grady

Owen doesn't control the raptors: he says what they have is a relationship built on respect. When a worker falls into the pen, Owen steps in and holds all four back with his outstretched hand until the guy gets out. Vic Hoskins, InGen's security chief, wants to turn them into military weapons; Owen and his assistant Barry push back.

Park owner Simon Masrani asks Owen to assess the paddock of the Indominus rex, a hybrid dinosaur made by Dr. Henry Wu. Taking him there is operations manager Claire Dearing, with whom Owen had one disastrous date.

Inside the paddock, Owen realizes too late that the Indominus has fooled everyone. It escapes, and he survives by hiding under a truck and dousing himself in gasoline to mask his scent. Then he heads out with Claire to find her nephews, Zach and Gray, lost in the park, and she saves him from a pterosaur.

Hoskins sends the raptors after the Indominus. But the hybrid has raptor DNA and takes over the pack. Owen wins Blue back just in time, and she joins the final fight alongside the T. rex. In the end, with the island evacuated, Owen and Claire decide to stick together.

Three years later, Owen is building a cabin in the middle of nowhere and is split from Claire. Isla Nublar's volcano has come to life, and she shows up with an offer: Benjamin Lockwood, Hammond's old partner, wants to move the dinosaurs to a sanctuary, and they need Owen to find Blue. Videos of baby Blue win him over.

On the island, Ken Wheatley's mercenaries shoot Blue, knock Owen out with a tranquilizer, and leave the group behind. Owen wakes up with lava closing in and barely escapes the eruption. With Claire and Franklin, he sneaks aboard the ship carrying the dinosaurs and helps save Blue with T. rex blood.

The dinosaurs end up at Lockwood's estate in Northern California, where Eli Mills is running an underground auction. Locked in a cell, Owen and Claire break out with help from a Stygimoloch that smashes the wall, and Owen crashes the auction with it.

The night's big item is the Indoraptor, a weapon built from the Indominus. It gets loose and hunts Owen, Claire and Lockwood's granddaughter, Maisie, through the house until Blue shows up to fight it. When the caged animals start dying from a gas leak, Maisie decides to set them free. Owen asks Blue to come with him, but she runs off.

Four years later, with dinosaurs loose around the world, Owen and Claire are raising Maisie in hiding at a cabin in the Sierra Nevada. Owen works as a dinosaur wrangler, returning strays to their herds. Blue shows up with a baby, Beta, born without a mate. Poachers take Maisie and Beta.

With help from Barry, now with French intelligence, Owen and Claire track them to an illegal dinosaur market in Malta, where he outruns Atrociraptors on a motorcycle. Pilot Kayla Watts flies them to Biosyn's valley in Italy. There, with Alan Grant and Maisie, Owen captures Beta, and the family brings her home to Blue.

Owen isn't in Michael Crichton's novels. Colin Trevorrow built him from an idea Steven Spielberg had floated since 2004, a raptor trainer, and threw out drafts where the animals became army weapons: that went to the villain. Chris Pratt trained with animal trainer Randy Miller and brought the clicker and hand signals to the screen.
