Michonne

The katana-wielding survivor who steps out of the woods with two chained walkers

Michonne shows up out of nowhere in the last episode of S2: a hooded woman with a katana and two armless, jawless walkers on chains, which she uses as camouflage among the dead. Quiet and wary, she takes a long time to reveal who she was before the world ended.

The Walking Dead · S2–S3

The hooded stranger

Michonne saves Andrea, who got separated fleeing the farm, and the two spend the winter together on the road. In S3 they reach Woodbury, and Michonne distrusts the Governor from day one. Andrea stays; Michonne leaves. Wounded, she reaches the prison with news that Glenn and Maggie have been taken and guides Rick to the town.

In Woodbury she finds the Governor's daughter, Penny, turned and hidden in a room. Michonne kills her and drives a shard of glass into the Governor's eye. He starts demanding Michonne in exchange for peace, and Merle goes as far as taking her away tied up, but lets her go on the way. By the end of the season, Michonne loses Andrea.

Andre

At the prison, Michonne grows close to Carl and Judith. When the prison falls, she goes back to walking alone among the dead with two new chained walkers, until she decides she doesn't want to live like that anymore. In a dream, the audience learns her past: she had a three-year-old son, Andre, who died early in the outbreak because of the carelessness of her boyfriend, Mike, and his friend Terry. The two walkers she kept on chains were them.

Michonne finds Rick and Carl and goes with them to Terminus. In S5, she's among those pushing hardest to give Alexandria a chance. She hangs her katana on the wall and agrees to be the town's constable alongside Rick.

Beside Rick

Michonne and Rick get together after the herd breaks into Alexandria. When Negan takes control, she's the first to tell Rick they have to fight back. She scouts the Sanctuary alone, stockpiles weapons in secret and convinces Rick to look for allies. In the war against the Saviors she fights on the front line and backs Rick's decision to let Negan live.

Six years later

Michonne is devastated when Rick is gone. Six years later she runs Alexandria, raises Judith and little RJ, her son with Rick, and keeps the gates shut to nearly everyone. She has an X branded on her back, and S9 explains why: an old friend, Jocelyn, was welcomed into Alexandria and kidnapped the town's children. To rescue them, Michonne and Judith had to face the kids Jocelyn had trained to kill.

When the Whisperers arrive, she agrees to ally with the other communities again.

Rick's boots

During the war with the Whisperers, Michonne travels with a stranger named Virgil to an island in search of weapons. He locks her up, and there she finds Rick's boots and a phone with a drawing of her and Judith. Rick might be alive. Michonne says goodbye to her kids over the radio, runs into a group of survivors on the road and sets off with them to find him.
