David

Peter Weyland's android aboard the Prometheus

David is an android built by Peter Weyland, head of Weyland Corporation. On the science vessel Prometheus, he looks after the crew while they sleep on the way to a distant planet. Polite and curious, he copies mannerisms from the movies he watches and keeps his real opinion of humans to himself.

First minutes

In a flashback, Peter Weyland switches David on for the first time in a white room overlooking the mountains. Asked to pick a name, the android looks at a replica of Michelangelo's David and chooses David. He plays Wagner on the piano at his maker's request.

Then he asks the question that gets under Weyland's skin: if man created David, who created man? Weyland says they'll look for that answer together. David points out that he will live forever and his creator won't. Weyland tells him to bring the tea.

Alone on the Prometheus

In 2093, the Prometheus travels with its crew in hypersleep, following an invitation found in ancient cave paintings. Alone on the ship, David shoots hoops on a bike, studies dead languages and watches Lawrence of Arabia, copying Peter O'Toole's hair and lines. He also peeks into the dreams of archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw.

When the ship reaches LV-223, David is the only one who can read the Engineers' symbols. Inside the structure, he secretly takes a canister of black liquid and takes orders the crew can't hear, from someone hidden on board.

The black liquid

David slips a drop of the liquid into Charlie Holloway's drink. Holloway gets sick and is burned alive, and Shaw learns she's pregnant with something that isn't human. David tries to keep her sedated, but she operates on herself and escapes.

Then the man giving the orders shows up: Peter Weyland, alive and hidden on board, wants the Engineer to give him more life. David wakes the last Engineer and speaks to it in the ancient language. The creature tears David's head off and kills Weyland. Still working, the head warns Shaw and points her to another ship. She takes the android with her and the two set off for the Engineers' world.

The Engineers' world

In 2104, the colony ship Covenant picks up a transmission from Shaw and detours to an unknown planet. There, pale creatures kill part of the landing team, and a hooded man saves the survivors. It's David, his hair grown long, living alone in a city full of petrified bodies.

He meets Walter, a newer, more obedient model with the same face. He teaches Walter to play the flute and, bit by bit, reveals what happened: when he arrived, he released the black liquid over the Engineers' city and killed them all. Walter finds David's drawings and lab, with what's left of Shaw. The android has spent the decade creating new life forms.

In Walter's place

David leads Captain Oram to a room of eggs and lets one open. Walter tries to stop him and the two fight. Soon after, an android comes back to help Daniels and the rest of the crew escape, and the ship takes off as an alien attacks.

Daniels kills the creature and lies down for hypersleep. Before she goes under, she realizes the android isn't Walter: it's David. She screams, but sleep takes her. David walks to the human embryo storage, regurgitates two alien embryos and tucks them in among the others. He records a report as Walter, with the Covenant on its way to the colony.

In comics and books

Michael Fassbender studied the replicant Rachael from Blade Runner, the HAL 9000 computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey and even the movements of Olympic diver Greg Louganis to build David. In Alien: Covenant he plays two roles: David and Walter, a newer model from the same line. The android's name is a nod to Michelangelo's statue.
