Seventeen-year-old Beaufort "Beau" Swan trades Phoenix for Forks to live with his dad. At school he meets Edythe Cullen, who seems to hate him until she saves him from an accident. Beau learns she's a vampire, and they fall in love. The story tracks Twilight closely, with genders swapped, until the tracker Joss decides to hunt Beau. She lures him into a trap and bites him, and the venom spreads too far to be drawn out. Beau becomes a vampire. To protect him, the Cullens fake his death, and he has to leave his human family behind. In the end, Beau and Edythe get engaged.

Behind the scenesAn answer to the critics
Meyer wrote the book to answer critics who called Bella a damsel in distress. In the foreword, she says it's the story of a human in distress, girl or boy.
The first edition put both books in one volume: Twilight on one side and, flipped over, Life and Death. The Brazilian and Spanish-language editions only exist in that dual format.
The opening follows Twilight almost scene by scene, but the ending changes: Beau becomes a vampire, the Cullens fake his death, and he gets engaged to Edythe.
