Years after The Walking Dead ends, Maggie's son, Hershel, is kidnapped and taken to Manhattan, cut off and overrun by walkers. Maggie turns to Negan, who is hiding out with a girl named Ginny, because the kidnapper is the Croat, a former Savior. The two head onto the island with a small crew. On their trail is Marshal Perlie Armstrong of New Babylon, who is hunting Negan for killing five men. Negan earns the respect of local groups. The assault on Madison Square Garden goes wrong, and Tommaso, who was helping them, turns out to be a traitor. Maggie hands Negan to the Croat in exchange for Hershel, just as she'd planned all along. The Croat takes Negan to the Dama, who wants him to lead.
