Kirk, Spock and McCoy are camping in Yosemite when the Enterprise-A is sent to Nimbus III, the "planet of galactic peace". There, three diplomats have been taken hostage by Sybok, a Vulcan who embraces emotion and who turns out to be Spock's half-brother. The hostage crisis was bait to grab a starship. Sybok uses mind melds to ease each person's deepest pain and wins over the crew. Only Kirk refuses. Sybok takes the ship to Sha Ka Ree, at the center of the galaxy, where he believes he'll find God. The being that shows up is a trapped creature that wants the ship to escape. Sybok sacrifices himself, a Klingon ship destroys the being and saves Kirk, and the trio goes back to their camping trip.
