The mysterious Dr. Kovich sends Burnham after a trail left by 24th-century scientists: the path to the technology of the Progenitors, the civilization that seeded life across the galaxy. Competing for it are Moll and L'ak, two outlaw couriers. L'ak is a Breen prince and dies midseason, and Moll takes over a Breen faction to try to bring him back. Captain Rayner, gruff and pulled from command, becomes Burnham's first officer. Burnham and Book find their way back to each other. In the end, Burnham reaches the technology and chooses to send it into a black hole. In an epilogue years later, Kovich reveals who he really is, and Discovery sets off on one last secret mission.
