Quick recap
In Kanto, Ash takes on the seven Frontier Brains, each with their own rules, and brings back old Pokémon from the lab, like Charizard, Bulbasaur and Squirtle. May enters the Kanto Contests, splits a ribbon with Ash after a tie, and reaches the Grand Festival, where she falls in the semifinals. Ash catches an Aipom that keeps stealing his hat. After several losses, he beats Brandon and his legendaries and completes all seven Symbols. He's offered a spot as a Frontier Brain and turns it down. May leaves for Johto, Max returns to Hoenn, Brock heads home, and Ash sets off for Sinnoh with Pikachu and a stowaway Aipom.
