Quick recap

The X-Men recruit Kitty Pryde and take on the Hellfire Club, a circle of powerful elites that includes Emma Frost. Mastermind manipulates the mind of Jean Grey, who carries the Phoenix Force, and she turns on her friends. Once free of his control, Jean loses herself completely: she becomes Dark Phoenix, consumes a star and kills billions of beings on a distant world. The Shi'ar Empire demands she pay for the crime, and the X-Men fight for her in a duel on the Moon. Facing the risk of losing control again, Jean makes a final choice. The saga ends with the X-Men in mourning.

Trivia

  1. Behind the scenesThe ending was rewritten

The original plan had Jean depowered and set free. Editor-in-chief Jim Shooter vetoed it: she had wiped out a whole star system and couldn't walk away. That led to the ending of issue #137.
