The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

At his 111th birthday, Bilbo vanishes from his party and leaves his ring to his nephew Frodo Baggins. Gandalf discovers it's Sauron's One Ring, and Frodo leaves the Shire with Sam, then Merry and Pippin, hunted by the Nazgûl. In Bree, the ranger Strider guides them. On Weathertop, Frodo is wounded, and Arwen carries him to Rivendell. There, the Council of Elrond decides to destroy the Ring in Mount Doom and forms the Fellowship: four hobbits, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Boromir. Saruman turns out to be a traitor. In Moria, Gandalf falls fighting a Balrog. After Lothlórien, Boromir tries to take the Ring. The Uruk-hai carry off Merry and Pippin, Boromir dies, and Frodo and Sam head for Mordor alone.

2. ReferenceArwen instead of Glorfindel

   In the book, the Elf Glorfindel carries Frodo to the Ford of Bruinen. The film gave the scene to Arwen and dropped Tom Bombadil entirely.

3. Behind the scenesAragorn was recast

   Stuart Townsend started as Aragorn, but Jackson felt he was too young. Viggo Mortensen read the book on the plane, got a crash course in fencing and began with the Weathertop scenes.
