Elizabeth Swann

The Port Royal governor's daughter who dreams of pirates

Elizabeth Swann is the daughter of Port Royal's governor and has loved pirate stories since she was a child. Raised to marry well, she gets a proposal from Commodore Norrington, but the one she cares for is Will Turner, the blacksmith. When the Black Pearl attacks the town, she finds she can bargain with pirates better than any officer.

Fascinated by pirates

As a girl on her father's ship, Elizabeth sings a pirate song and gets scolded by Norrington. When they rescue young Will from a shipwreck, she takes a gold skull medallion from around his neck and keeps it hidden for eight years.

Grown up and laced into a corset that's far too tight, she faints during Norrington's proposal and falls into the sea. Jack Sparrow saves her. That night the Black Pearl raids Port Royal looking for the medallion. Elizabeth invokes the pirate right of parley and, to hide who she is, gives her name as Elizabeth Turner.

Rum on the bonfire

Barbossa believes she is Bootstrap Bill's daughter and uses her blood in the ritual on Isla de Muerta. It doesn't work. Will rescues her, but the pirates catch up and Elizabeth ends up marooned with Jack on a desert island. She burns the whole stash of rum in a huge bonfire, and the smoke brings the Navy.

To save Will, she agrees to marry Norrington if he goes after the Pearl. In the end, in Port Royal, she stands by Will when he rescues Jack from the gallows, and her father accepts her choice.

On the run

Her wedding to Will is cut short when Lord Cutler Beckett arrests them both for helping Jack. The governor gets her out of prison, but she doesn't flee: she steals Beckett's letters of marque, stows away on a merchant ship dressed as a boy and talks the superstitious crew into sailing for Tortuga.

There she finds Jack and a drunken, ruined Norrington. Jack hands her the compass that points to what you want most, and the needle leads to Davy Jones's chest. In the Kraken's final attack, Elizabeth kisses Jack and, in the same move, chains him to the mast so the others can escape. Will sees the kiss. She carries the guilt for the rest of the film.

Captain and Pirate Lord

In Singapore, Elizabeth helps bargain with the pirate Sao Feng and joins the voyage to Davy Jones' Locker to bring Jack back. On the way back to the land of the living she sees her father's soul drift by, killed on Beckett's orders. Sao Feng mistakes her for Calypso and, mortally wounded in an attack by the Flying Dutchman, hands her his ship and his title of Pirate Lord.

At the meeting of the nine Pirate Lords, everyone votes for himself as Pirate King, until Jack votes for her. As king, Elizabeth declares war on the Company and gives the speech that rallies the fleet.

A wedding mid-battle

In the maelstrom Calypso stirs up, the Pearl and the Flying Dutchman go to war. Will proposes right there, and Barbossa marries them on deck between sword strokes. Soon after, Davy Jones mortally wounds Will, who becomes the new captain of the Flying Dutchman.

Will can only set foot on land one day every ten years. They spend it together on a beach, and he leaves her the chest holding his heart. In a post-credits scene, ten years go by: Elizabeth waits on a cliff top with a boy, their son, and sees the green flash that means Will is coming back.

Reunited

Elizabeth barely appears in the fifth film. When the Trident of Poseidon is destroyed and the curses of the sea end, she finds Will on a hilltop, free of the Flying Dutchman, and they embrace in front of their son, Henry. In a post-credits scene, a shadow that looks like Davy Jones shows up in the couple's bedroom.

Off screen

In comics and books

Keira Knightley described Elizabeth as a 21st-century girl stuck in the 18th century: she starts as a damsel in distress who won't sit around waiting to be rescued. Knightley said she was done with the character after At World's End and isn't in On Stranger Tides. She came back for a single day of shooting in London for Dead Men Tell No Tales. In the franchise's video games, Elizabeth is voiced by Eliza Schneider.
