In Los Angeles, guidance counselor Madison Clark, her fiancé, teacher Travis Manawa, and their kids sense something is wrong: Madison's son Nick, an addict, sees a friend eating someone. The family teams up with the Salazars: Daniel, Griselda and their daughter, Ofelia. The National Guard fences off the neighborhood and calls it a safe zone, but hauls the sick, Nick included, to a base. There, Nick meets Victor Strand. The military plans to kill all the civilians. The group storms the base and gets their people out. Griselda dies, and Travis has to shoot his ex-wife, Liza, who was bitten. Strand takes everyone to his beach house, where the yacht Abigail is waiting.
