Team Magma and Team Aqua use ancient orbs to awaken Groudon and Kyogre, and Ash and Pikachu end up in the middle of the legendary clash until the crisis is contained. May reaches the Hoenn Grand Festival and is knocked out by Drew. At the Hoenn League, Ash gets through the early rounds and loses in the quarterfinals to Tyson, finishing in the top eight.
