After the Battle of New York, Tony Stark has anxiety attacks, can't sleep and builds dozens of suits, straining things with Pepper Potts. A terrorist called the Mandarin claims a string of bombings across the U.S. When Happy Hogan is hurt in one, Tony threatens the Mandarin on TV; his Malibu mansion is destroyed. Presumed dead, he ends up in Tennessee and, with a kid named Harley, learns the blasts come from soldiers treated with Extremis, an unstable regenerative treatment from Maya Hansen and Aldrich Killian. The Mandarin is a fake: actor Trevor Slattery. The real villain is Killian, who kidnaps Pepper and doses her with Extremis. With Rhodes, Tony saves the President and Pepper kills Killian. Tony has surgery to remove the shrapnel and destroys his suits.
