The Guardians are working for the Sovereign, but Rocket steals some of their batteries and the gang becomes a target for the high priestess Ayesha. They're saved by Ego, who introduces himself as Quill's father. Ego is a Celestial, a living planet, and brings Quill, Gamora and Drax there, where they meet Mantis. Yondu is hired to catch them, but his crew mutinies; he escapes with Rocket and Baby Groot. Nebula hunts Gamora, and the sisters end up working things out. Ego reveals his plan to take over the galaxy and admits he put the tumor in Quill's mother's head. The Guardians destroy Ego's core with a bomb planted by Groot. Yondu sacrifices himself to save Quill, who realizes Yondu was his real dad. Nebula goes after Thanos.

In the post-credits scene, Sylvester Stallone's Stakar gets the old team back together: Michelle Yeoh, Ving Rhames, Michael Rosenbaum and the voice of Miley Cyrus. In the comics, they're the original Guardians.
Peter says he used to tell other kids his father was David Hasselhoff. Later, Ego briefly turns into Hasselhoff himself, and the actor even sings on the credits soundtrack.
Stan Lee appears in a spacesuit telling stories to the Watchers, beings who only observe the universe. The scene fueled the theory that he's the same character in every cameo.
In one of the post-credits scenes, Ayesha unveils a new perfect being and names him Adam. In the comics, he's Adam Warlock, and he comes back later in the franchise.
