Three novellas about Dunk, a big, poor hedge knight, and Egg, his bald squire. In The Hedge Knight, Dunk buries his master, goes to a great tourney and defends a puppeteer from Prince Aerion. The fight becomes a trial of seven against seven; Dunk wins, but Prince Baelor dies from an accidental blow by his brother Maekar. Egg, who is really Aegon, Maekar's son, leaves with Dunk as his squire. In The Sworn Sword, the pair serve an old knight in a water dispute with a powerful neighbor, and Dunk settles it in a duel in the river. In The Mystery Knight, at a wedding tourney, Dunk stumbles onto a plot to put another king on the throne, which falls apart in the end. Left open: the duo's next adventures.
