Paul has been emperor for 12 years, and his jihad has killed billions, yet his visions show that stopping it would be worse. The Bene Gesserit, the Guild and the Tleilaxu conspire and give him Hayt, a ghola of Duncan Idaho. Irulan secretly feeds Chani contraceptives; when Chani finds out, she changes her diet and gets pregnant. A stone burner attack blinds Paul, but he keeps "seeing" through his visions. Chani dies giving birth to twins, Leto and Ghanima. The Tleilaxu Scytale threatens the babies, and Paul kills him guided by his son's vision. Blind, Paul follows Fremen custom and walks alone into the desert. Alia becomes regent for the twins.

Behind the scenesDune's editor turned it down
John W. Campbell, who serialized Dune in Analog, rejected Messiah. He felt Paul had become a fool who ruined himself and the galaxy. For Herbert, that was exactly the point.
Herbert likened the first trilogy to a musical fugue: Dune is the heroic melody and Messiah its inversion. The book deliberately undercuts Paul's triumph.
Villeneuve's third film adapts this book and opens on December 18, 2026. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Alia, and Robert Pattinson plays Scytale, the Tleilaxu who wants to topple Paul.
