Cornered by the Honored Matres, the Bene Gesserit turn Chapterhouse into a desert to breed sandworms. Mother Superior Odrade holds Duncan Idaho, former Honored Matre Murbella and Scytale, the last Tleilaxu. Murbella survives the spice agony and becomes a Reverend Mother, and a ghola of Miles Teg regains his memories. Odrade puts Teg in charge of an attack on Gammu and Junction. Victory seems certain, but Odrade is captured and killed. Following her plan, Murbella kills the enemy leader, takes over the Honored Matres and begins merging the two orders. Sheeana, Duncan, Teg and Scytale escape in a no-ship with sandworms. In the epilogue, a mysterious couple watches them go.

Behind the scenesFrank Herbert's last book
Herbert died in 1986, a year after it came out, leaving the story unfinished. The book reached No. 2 on the New York Times list.
The epilogue shows a mysterious pair, Daniel and Marty, watching the ship escape. Herbert didn't live to explain them. The answer came in his son's books.
Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson finished the story in Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007), based on Frank's notes found after his death.
