Thirty-five years before Dune, several fates begin to cross. Planetologist Pardot Kynes is sent by the Emperor to study Arrakis's mysteries and catches the Fremen's attention. On Giedi Prime, the boy Duncan Idaho tries to escape Harkonnen cruelty. Young Leto Atreides, heir to Caladan, leaves home to study on Ix, while at the imperial court Prince Shaddam and his friend Fenring plot in secret. The volume introduces every player in the prelude and leaves the conspiracies in motion for Volume 2.
