Three years later, on the day and at the place Trunks warned of, two energy-draining androids appear: 19 and 20, who is Dr. Gero himself. Goku fights, but the heart disease takes him down, and he's carried home. Vegeta arrives as a Super Saiyan and destroys 19. Gero flees to his lab and activates Androids 17 and 18, who promptly kill him. They, along with the silent 16, defeat Vegeta, Trunks, Piccolo and Tien, then set off to find Goku. Piccolo fuses with Kami to grow stronger. Trunks finds a second time machine, and Bulma realizes it came from a different future.

   Dr. Gero, who builds the androids, was a Red Ribbon Army scientist, the army Goku destroyed as a kid. That is where the revenge comes from.

   Former editor Kazuhiko Torishima was not happy with Androids 19 and 20 as villains, so Toriyama moved other androids to the center of the story.

   Toriyama said he liked Android 18 because she was a type of girl he had never drawn before, and he liked her slanted eyes.
