Grogu

The little one from Yoda's species who became a Mandalorian's son

A small green being, from the same species as Yoda, who becomes the target of a manhunt in the years after the fall of the Empire. Bounty hunter Din Djarin is hired to find him and turn him in, and their meeting opens The Mandalorian.

Before Arvala-7

Grogu lived in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant as a youngling. When Order 66 broke out, he wasn't alone: Jedi Master Kelleran Beq got him out of the Temple in the middle of the massacre, and loyal Naboo soldiers helped them escape the planet.

What came after stayed hidden for years. The series only shows that past in flashes of memory, which Grogu himself relives when something triggers them.

The 50-year-old target

A client tied to the Empire hires Din Djarin to retrieve a target on Arvala-7. With help from the moisture farmer Kuiil, and after a shootout alongside the droid IG-11, Din discovers the bounty is a tiny creature. The file says it's 50 years old. For its species, that's still a child.

Din decides to protect him the moment IG-11 tries to carry out the order to kill the target. In the next episode, when a mudhorn is about to crush the Mandalorian, the little one lifts the animal into the air with the Force and passes out from exhaustion right after.

Handed over and rescued

On Nevarro, Din hands the child over to the client and gets bars of beskar as payment. The unease doesn't go away. He goes back, storms the Imperial hideout, and takes the little one back, breaking the rules of the Bounty Hunters' Guild. From then on, the two are on the run together.

A clan of two

Greef Karga proposes a trap for the client on Nevarro. On the way, Greef is wounded and the child heals the wound with the Force, something nobody there had ever seen. The plan goes wrong and Moff Gideon arrives with troops, wanting the little one at any cost.

In the fight, the child sends a blast of flamethrower fire back at the soldiers. The Armorer declares that Din and the little one are a clan of two and gives Din a mission: find the Jedi, the order the child belongs to, and return him to them.

The blood Gideon wants

In an Imperial lab on Nevarro, Din and his allies find recordings from a scientist working with Gideon. They show that the Empire wants the child's blood because of his high midi-chlorian count, and that tests on other subjects have failed.

A name, at last

On Corvus, Din finds Ahsoka Tano. She communicates with the child through the Force and shares what she learned: his name is Grogu, he was raised at the Temple, and someone hid him when the Temple fell. Ahsoka senses his attachment to Din and refuses to train him. She suggests Din take him to the ruins of a temple on Tython and call out to any Jedi still out there.

Tython and the call

On Tython, Grogu meditates on the temple's seeing stone. Boba Fett and Fennec Shand show up, but end up fighting alongside Din. Gideon's dark troopers capture Grogu anyway.

Din puts together a team and storms Gideon's cruiser. When the dark troopers are about to win, a lone Jedi cuts through the ship and destroys the droids. It's Luke Skywalker, who heard the call. Din takes off his helmet to say a real goodbye, and Grogu leaves with Luke and R2-D2.

The choice

Grogu trains with Luke at an academy under construction. He remembers pieces of Order 66 and the clones storming the Temple. Ahsoka visits the two of them and talks with Luke about the little one's future.

Din shows up wanting to see his foster son, but backs out at the last minute and leaves a gift: a beskar chain-mail shirt. Luke puts two options in front of Grogu: Yoda's lightsaber, to continue as a Jedi, or the chain mail, to go back to the Mandalorian and give up his training. Grogu chooses the chain mail. He reaches Tatooine in time to help in the war against the Pykes and calm Boba Fett's rancor.

Din Grogu

Back at Din's side, Grogu goes with his father to Mandalore. Din wants to bathe in the waters beneath the mines to redeem himself in the eyes of the Creed. In the second-to-last episode, Grogu gets a robotic body built from IG-11's parts, IG-12, which he uses to walk and communicate.

In the last episode, Grogu is officially adopted. He's now called Din Grogu and becomes Din's apprentice within the Creed. Father and son settle on Nevarro and start working for the New Republic.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

On the big screen

In The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), the two hunt Imperial warlords on behalf of the New Republic. To reach the mysterious Commander Coin, Din agrees to rescue Rotta the Hutt, who has become a fighting star on a moon called Shakari.

When Din is captured, taken to the Hutt twins on Nal Hutta, and poisoned by a dragonsnake, it's Grogu who acts on his own: he stays behind, gets the medicine that cures his father, and then goes into the twins' palace with him. In the final showdown, he holds Rotta with the Force before he falls into the dragonsnake's lair. The film ends with Din letting his son pilot the new Razor Crest into the jump to hyperspace.
